DISCUSSION/BACKGROUND
The Town Council has heard from various residents about interest in establishing Sister City relationships with similar tourism focus communities in France and Baja California Sur. The Town Council has expressed an interest in exploring possible sister city relationships and joining Sister Cities International (SCI) whose mission is to promote peace through mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation - one individual, one community at a time.

Sister Cities International was created at President Eisenhower's 1956 White House summit on citizen diplomacy, where he envisioned a network that would be a champion for peace and prosperity by fostering bonds between people from different communities around the world. President Eisenhower reasoned that people from different cultures could understand, appreciate, and celebrate their differences while building partnerships that would lessen the chance of new conflicts.

The Town has had previous informal sister city relationships but nothing was formalized or structured through Sister City International. The Town can have more than one sister city and many communities have several based on the interests of their residents and business community.

Mayor Dunbar received a formal invitation from the Mayor of Todos Santos, Baja California Sur, Mexico to explore establishing a sister city relationship in April 2018.
